VIVITROL TREATMENT FOR ALCOHOL

VIVITROL is an injectable form of the drug Naltrexone which is given as a monthly intramuscular (IM) injection. It is designed to be used in combination with psychosocial support which will allow people to refrain from drinking alcohol.

The ability to sustain effective doses of VIVITROL in the body over one month is due to the proprietary Medisorb microspheres technology, which allows extended release of medication over time. Also acting as an opioid-blocker, Vivitrol will allow people to reduce or abstain from drinking.

Compliance in patients using Vivitrol is high due to the fact that it is administered only once per month.

You cannot take Vivitrol if:

  • You are currently taking narcotic pain medications (Codeine, Percocet, Vicodin, Oxycontin) or certain medications for diarrhea (diphenoxylate)
  • You have hepatitis or liver failure
