Addiction is a Brain Disease
Cocaine is highly addictive stimulant that directly affects the brain. Derived from coca leaves, which have been ingested for thousands of years, powdered cocaine (cocaine hydrochloride) has been an abused substance for over 100 years.
Street Names: coke, blow, white, snow, flake, nose candy.
Cocaine in the powdered form is usually inhaled or “snorted” through the nose. It can also be injected into the blood stream.
The high from a typical inhaled dose of cocaine usually lasts for about 20 minutes. The user will appear to be very alert, energetic and confident.
Physical Symptoms:
Dilated pupils
Runny nose
Little to no appetite
The “high” is followed by profound depression, mental fatigue, restlessness, irritability, and the intense desire to use again.
An overdose of cocaine can cause extreme agitation, respiratory failure, or death.
Crack Cocaine
Crack cocaine is the street name given to the freebase form of cocaine that has been processed into a smokable substance.
The term “crack” refers to the crackling sound heard when the substance is smoked. The “high” from crack occurs in less than 10 seconds and typically lasts for 20 minutes.
“FREEBASE”- The chemical form of cocaine that has been processed with ammonia or sodium bicarbonate and water, and heated to remove the hydrochloride, allowing the substance to be smoked.
Crack cocaine is highly addictive and inexpensive to produce and buy. There is currently only one known effective treatment for cocaine dependence and that is PROMETA.
